In episode # 63 Devin Galaudet reveals the secrets of his bestselling memoir “10,000 Miles with my Dead Father’s Ashes”. The book took him 7 years to write and is a personal story and shows, that there is no universal path for truth. We learn, that you can come from the most bizarre circumstances and travel the oddest directions and still lead an exceptional life.

Devin Galaudet is the editor and publisher of the ‚In The Know Traveler‘, which celebrates 15 years in August. He also publishes several other travel-inspired web sites including In The Know Bride, which chronicles his endeavor to marry his wife in 100 countries around the world (They’ve married 21 times in 15 countries, so far). Devin has written for the Huffington Post, The Good Men Project, The Citron Review, TravelAge West, and Turkish Airlines’ Sky Life Magazine and many more.

It was Devin Galaudet’s job to take the ashes of his father and to pour them into the waters of Cadiz, Spain, after his father’s death. Carrying them across Spain by car, train, and backpack. Half a mile from the Mediterranean, though, Devin lost his father’s ashes. Standing in the middle of a windy cobblestone street in Old Town Cadiz.

Devin’s #1 bestselling memoir “10,000 Miles with my Dead Father’s Ashes” is a finalist in forwarding INDIE’s best autobiography or memoir for 2018, is available everywhere and answers the question, what do you do when you lose your father’s ashes.

He is a frequently sought-after guest expert on relationship and travel, Devin has appeared on FOX-TV, NBC-TV, the Side Hustle School podcast, the California Writers Coalition,, the Jewish Journal, and hundreds of podcasts. Devin’s story has been featured in the bestselling book “Born for This,” and “Of Tiny Threads.” He is also a recent winner of the 2019 EIPPY award for “10,000 Miles with My Dead Father’s Ashes.”

Devin holds an MFA in Creative Nonfiction from Antioch University at Los Angeles.

Facts / Strategy learnings:
  • To write about sensible, emotional aspects, esp. your own life story is a real challenge
  • I´m experiencing this, too while writing my own memoir and about the FLY-Freestyle-Your-Life System
  • you can´t write your life as a template, it´s a bio and your emotional life´s journey
  • we guessed both that we might be sharing too much of the personal insights but at the same time must provide value and meaning for others in our books
  • we write the book for our ‚little selves‘ and others to inspire them to always have faith and take the leap of courage
  • His father had lots of bad qualities but also gave him the blueprint of what it was, that he didn't wanna be and the same counts for me and my mother
  • Get out of your own way and the way of your story and stand back from it
  • We needed to observe ourselves and share a more objective perspective
  • We share a wide perspective to inspire others of what it is to be a failed human being
Tips & Tricks / Secrets:
  • View Devin´s book and learn how to deal with parents, who are not ‚dream parents‘ but a jerk, lie, cheat and do not show feelings but behave coldly like frozen ice and are nuddy
  • His dad wanted to return to Cadiz in Spain but in fact, never left America
  • Dad grew up as one of 13 children on the wrong side of Chicago and maybe that´s why he made up the story of Spain and his last wish to return there to make his life bigger than it was
  • The book is revealing Devin´s relationship with his father, who was lying and a thief but at the same time Devin´s hero for 25 years and despite his difficult manner he idealized him
  • Learn how it was for Devin to love and hate somebody at the same time
  • It takes a big leap of courage to share our story with all good and bad times we´ve gone through
  • We deliver the opportunity and inspiration for others that there is always a way, we just need to find it
  • Accept your own stupidity
  • Challenges can make us stronger and wiser if we chose to learn from them, nothing is a failure
  • We too are often considered as a huge failure in our roles
  • Don´t take yourself too serious
